Hlemmur Square

Hlemmur Square
combines luxury hostel and hotel accommodations under one roof. Named for the central meeting spot that once served as a watering hole for travelers and their horses, Hlemmur Square is quickly becoming an extension of the city’s downtown neighborhood.

Klaus Ortlieb, the European hotelier who has an extensive background in both Europe (Claridge’s in London and Excelsior Hotel in Cologne, Germany) and the United States (the former Cooper Square Hotel and The Gotham Hotel on 46th Street in New York City, The Hotel Modern New Orleans), has created a stay experience that is new to Iceland with affordable yet stylish hostel accommodations as well as 18 luxurious hotel rooms, with all guests able to access the youthful and vibrant atmosphere of the communal spaces. The lobby, restaurant and playroom for both children and adults are all designed for socializing in relaxed style. Live music in the lobby adds to the festive feel of the property, and the bar is bestowed with over a hundred different craft beers from all around the world, great selection of wines and many original cocktails.

Built in the 1930s, the five-story building embraces old and new design elements with a traditionally appointed lobby that recalls the colorful houses that make up the city’s landscape, while the rooms are modern and highlight Reykjavik’s contemporary look. As an added amenity, most of the hotel rooms feature balconies where visitors can take in the surrounding scenery.

Located conveniently near Reykjavik’s shopping, nightlife, restaurants, art galleries, swimming pools and spas, Hlemmur Square also features an attentive concierge team who can help plan adventures to popular Iceland attractions such as the Golden Circle, Blue Lagoon and Northern Lights as well as trips for whale watching, horseback riding in the countryside and excursions to Iceland’s glaciers. As Reykjavik continues to develop as a destination for travelers around the world, Hlemmur Square will provide an exciting new type of lodging for guests from all walks of life.
