Dieses gro\u00dfe Geb\u00e4ude wurde 1872 in nur sechs Monaten nach einer Zeichnung von C. Klentz gebaut, der 1866 bereits die Pl\u00e4ne f\u00fcr \u00cdpaka, die Bibliothek von Menntask\u00f3linn in Reykjav\u00edk, gezeichnet und diese errichtet hatte.<br \/>\nIm unteren Geschoss des Geb\u00e4udes befanden sich die Gef\u00e4ngniszellen, im oberen Geschoss dagegen bis 1919 das Landesgericht. Danach \u00fcbernahm das Oberste Gericht dessen Rolle und zog bis 1947 in Hegningarh\u00fasi\u00f0 ein. Der Stadtrat von Reykjav\u00edk versammelte sich bis 1903 in dem Geb\u00e4ude. Hegningarh\u00fasi\u00f0 wurde 144 Jahre lang, das hei\u00dft von 1872 bis 2016,als Gef\u00e4ngnis genutzt. Das Konservierungszentrum und die isl\u00e4ndische Regierung schlossen erst 2017 und erneut im Jahr 2020 eine Vereinbarung \u00fcber die Reparaturen und Renovierung des Geb\u00e4udes. Diese dauern noch an.
