Der gr\u00f6\u00dfte ist mit Abstand Vatnaj\u00f6kull im s\u00fcd\u00f6stlichen Teil des Landes. Er ist der gr\u00f6\u00dfte Gletscher der Welt au\u00dferhalb der Polarregionen und deckt 8000 km 2 ab. Danach kommt Langj\u00f6kull mit 950 km 2 , nur wenige Quadratkilometer gr\u00f6\u00dfer als Hofsj\u00f6kull. An vierter Stelle steht M\u00fdrdalsj\u00f6kull mit einer Gr\u00f6\u00dfe von fast 600 km 2 . Dann kommt Drangaj\u00f6kull westlich von Strandir, der 160 km 2 Land bedeckt. Weitere Gletscher sind deutlich kleiner. Der kleinste der gro\u00dfen Gletscher und Nummer 13 in der Reihe ist Sn\u00e6fellsj\u00f6kull, der rund 3 Quadratkilometer gro\u00df ist.
