Umgeben von Bergen bietet dieser See wunderbare Eindr\u00fccke und Fotomomente und ist auf vielen Postkarten abgebildet. Das familiengef\u00fchrte Unternehmen M\u00fdvatn Tours veranstaltet im Sommer t\u00e4glich Bustouren vom See M\u00fdvatn zu dem Vulkankrater der Askja. Diese Tagesausfl\u00fcge werden angeboten wenn die Hochlandroute zug\u00e4nglich ist. In diesem Jahr ist sie vom 18. Juni bis zum 7. September ge\u00f6ffnet. Der Besitzer Gisli Rafn begann schon 1984 mit seinem Vater zu dem ehemaligen Krater zu fahren, sodass er \u00fcber 30 Jahre Erfahrung auf dieser Strecke vorweisen kann. Es ist ein atemberaubender Blick und sieht aus wie auf einem anderen Planeten; die dunkle Lava bedeckt den kahlen Boden, der meistens schwarz ist mit einigen roten Felsen. Es hat zum einen den Krater Viti (H\u00f6lle) entstehen lassen, und au\u00dferdem den See Askja, der mit 217m der tiefste See in Island ist. Oberhalb der Askja findet man kurioserweise einen kleinen See in der Mitte des VitiKraters. Dort gibt es pl\u00f6tzlich eine Farbenpracht; orangefarbener Schlamm und blaumilchiges Wasser. Dies steht im starken Kontrast zu dem umliegenden Lavafeld. In der Luft liegt ein leichter Gestank, der Besucher daran erinnert, dass sie auf der Spitze eines aktiven Vulkans stehen, der zuletzt 1961 ausgebrochen ist. Um dieses Gebiet zu besichtigen erfordert es eine 35-min\u00fctige Wanderung. Bei dieser Mondfahrt wird auch bei ihrem ehemaligen Trainingsgel\u00e4nde Halt gemacht, wobei man sich gut vorstellen kann wie es w\u00e4re das Weltall zu besuchen. Auf der Strecke gibt es keine Restaurants, und daher sollte ein Picknick zum Mittag mitgebracht werden, da der ganze Tag eingeplant ist um die Naturerscheinungen zu erkunden.
