Die franz\u00f6sische Gesellschaft wurde ihm rasch zu oberfl\u00e4chlich.\u00a0 Mit 25 Jahren kaufte er im Jahr 1892 sein erstes Segelschiff und segelte nach den Shetlandinseln, auf die Hebriden, F\u00e4r\u00f6erinseln und nach Island. Im folgenden Jahr starb sein Vater und hinterlie\u00df ihm ein stattliches Erbe. Auch die n\u00e4chste Expedition gl\u00fcckte, und man nannte ihn bald den \u201cGentleman des Nordpols\u201d. Nach dem 1. Weltkrieg leitete er Expeditionen zu den F\u00e4r\u00f6erinseln, nach Jan Mayen, Island und Gr\u00f6nland. Die \u201cPourquoi Pas?\u201c diente ihm als wissenschaftliches Forschungsschiff mit einer gro\u00dfen Bibliothek und drei Laboratorien an Bord. Sie ankerte mehrfach in Island, wo Charcot Freunde gewann, darunter den isl\u00e4ndischen Naturkundler Bjarni S\u00e6mundsson. Die beiden trafen sich in Reykjav\u00edk anl\u00e4sslich einer Reparatur am Schiff. September 1936 Segel und war auf dem Weg nach Frankreich, als ein heftiger Sturm sie vom Kurs abtrieb und im Faxafl\u00f3i auf einen Felsen warf. Von der 40-k\u00f6pfigen Besatzung \u00fcberlebte nur ein Einziger. Die Nachricht s\u00e4te Entsetzen in Island, in Reykjav\u00edk wurde ein Gedenkgottesdienst f\u00fcr die Ertrunkenen abgehalten. Wie es auf der \u201cPourquoi Pas?\u201d wohl gewesen sein mag, das kann man am Su\u00f0urnes Forschungszentrum in Sandger\u00f0i zumindest ansatzweise erfahren. Das Schiff ist dort n\u00e4mlich teilweise rekonstruiert worden und enth\u00e4lt gro\u00dfe Teile der Originalausr\u00fcstung sowie Dinge aus<\/p>\n<p>Charcots pers\u00f6nlichem Besitz.
