Er ist einer der sch\u00f6nsten und kraftvollsten Wasserf\u00e4lle im Land und liegt nur eine halbe Stunde Autofahrt von Akureyri, H\u00fasav\u00edk oder M\u00fdvatn und nur hunderte Meter von der Ringstra\u00dfe 1 entfernt. Er ist lediglich rund 15 Meter hoch und 30 Meter breit. Go\u00f0afoss wurde 2020 (endlich) per Gesetz unter Schutz gestellt. Lange davor, im Jahr 1000, wurde \u00deorgeir \u00deorkelsson, ein heidnischer Vertreter von Al\u00feingi, mit der schwierigen Aufgabe betraut, im Parlament von \u00deingvellir einen Streit zwischen Heiden und Christen zu schlichten. \u00deorgeir legte sich unter einen Pelzmantel und r\u00fchrte sich erst am n\u00e4chsten Tag wieder, als er die Mitglieder des Parlaments nach L\u00f6gberg lud. Er erkl\u00e4rte, dass es gegen das \u00f6ffentliche Interesse sei, wenn in diesem Land nicht die gleichen Gesetze f\u00fcr alle gelten. \u00deorgeir machte sich Sorgen wegen religi\u00f6ser Streitigkeiten und wollte vermitteln. Er sprach dann sein Urteil und es wurde im Gesetz festgehalten, dass alle Menschen Christen sein und getauft werden sollten. Bei Heiden wurden einige christliche Br\u00e4uche gelockert, zum Beispiel konnten sie heimlich fasten. \u00deorgeir war bis zu diesem Zeitpunkt selbst ein Heide. Die Legende besagt, dass er seine G\u00f6tzen in den Go\u00f0afoss warf, als er von Al\u00feingi kam, da er westlich vom Wasserfall in Lj\u00f3savatn lebte, wo B\u00e1r\u00f0ardalur, Lj\u00f3savatnsskar\u00f0\/Fnj\u00f3skadalur und Kaldakinn aufeinandertreffen.
