Sprengisandur selbst ist im Wesentlichen eine W\u00fcste \u2013 ein karges Hochplateau im Zentrum des Landes, das zwischen den Gletschern Hofsj\u00f6kull im Westen und Vatnaj\u00f6kull im Osten liegt, mit dem Tungnafellsj\u00f6kull dazwischen. Die Sprengisandurstra\u00dfe verl\u00e4uft westlich davon.<br\/><br\/>Der Isl\u00e4ndische Wanderverein errichtete 1967 in Ny\u00f0alur am Fu\u00dfe des Gletschers eine Bergh\u00fctte \u2013 ein wundersch\u00f6ner Ort zum Ausruhen oder \u00dcbernachten mitten im Hochland. Islands l\u00e4ngster Fluss, die Thj\u00f3rsa, entspringt am Sprengisandur und flie\u00dft 230 km bis zum Meer. Entlang des Flussverlaufs befinden sich sieben Wasserkraftwerke im Besitz von Landsvirkjun; ein achtes ist in Planung.<br\/><br\/>Obwohl die Sprengisandur-Route eine Schotterstra\u00dfe ist, die nur mit Allradfahrzeugen und nur in den Sommermonaten befahren werden kann, wird sie dennoch von Wanderern, Radfahrern und Autofahrern frequentiert, die diese einzigartige Wildnis im Herzen des
