Der Strand ist von uralter Lava bedeckt, bekannt als \u00der\u00e1insskjaldarhraun, die vor mehreren tausend Jahren aus einem Krater nord\u00f6stlich des Fagradalsfjall austrat.  <br\/>Die K\u00fcste ist wundersch\u00f6n, und obwohl sie fast direkt an einer Hauptverkehrsstra\u00dfe liegt \u2013 denn Islands verkehrsreichste Nationalstra\u00dfe, die Reykjanesbraut, verl\u00e4uft s\u00fcdlich von Vatnsleysustrond \u2013 wagen sich erstaunlich wenige Menschen auf die alte K\u00fcstenstra\u00dfe, die der K\u00fcste folgt. <br\/>Heute leben etwa 100 Menschen direkt am Strand und 1.100 im Dorf Vogar, was insgesamt rund 1.200 Einwohner in der Gemeinde ergibt. Das Gebiet war \u00fcber die Jahrhunderte dicht besiedelt, trotz schwieriger Bedingungen f\u00fcr die Viehzucht. An diesem Ort steht bereits seit dem 12. Jahrhundert eine Kirche.
