En 1957, suite \u00e0 l\u2019abandon du village \u00e0 Flateyjardalur, l\u2019\u00e9glise fut transport\u00e9e en pi\u00e8ces d\u00e9tach\u00e9es par barque en traversant le d\u00e9troit vers Flatey. L\u2018\u00e9glise est class\u00e9e \u00e9difice historique depuis 2012. En 1943, la population de Flatey \u00e9tait \u00e0 son apog\u00e9e alors que 120 \u00e2mes y habit\u00e8rent. La derni\u00e8re famille est partie de l\u2018\u00eele seulement 25 ans plus tard, en 1967, et depuis, plus personne n\u2018y habite. L\u2018\u00eele de Flatey ne se situe qu\u2019\u00e0 2,5 km des terres et s\u2019\u00e9l\u00e8ve \u00e0 22 m d\u2019altitude au point le plus \u00e9lev\u00e9, l\u00e0 o\u00f9 est construit le phare. L\u2018\u00eele a une superficie de 2,62 km2.
