Il a notamment \u00e9crit, en allemand, douze livres pour enfants appel\u00e9s les livres de Nonni. Son premier ouvrage, titr\u00e9 Erlebnisse eines jungen Isl\u00e4nders von ihm selbst erz\u00e4hlt, fut publi\u00e9 en 1913. Il fut traduit en islandais en 1922, sous le titre Nonni: brot \u00far \u00e6skus\u00f6gu \u00cdslendings: eigin fr\u00e1s\u00f6gn. Ses livres racontent les aventures du h\u00e9ros Nonni et de son fr\u00e8re Manni qui se passent \u00e0 Akureyri et dans la campagne voisine, Eyjafj\u00f6r\u00f0ur. J\u00f3n Sveinsson est n\u00e9 en 1857 \u00e0 H\u00f6rg\u00e1rdalur. En 1865, il d\u00e9m\u00e9nage \u00e0 Akureyri dans une maison appel\u00e9e P\u00e1lsh\u00fas. En 1957, \u00e0 l\u2018occasion du centenaire de sa naissance, un mus\u00e9e ouvre ses portes \u00e0 l\u2019int\u00e9rieur de cette maison. Elle est alors rebaptis\u00e9e Nonnah\u00fas, la maison de Nonni. Les livres de Nonni sont traduits en presque 40 langues et sont publi\u00e9s \u00e0 des millions d\u2019exemplaires.<\/p>\n<p>Un aristocrate fran\u00e7ais offra \u00e0 J\u00f3n Sveinsson de financer ses \u00e9tudes. Celui-ci quitta alors l\u2019Islande en 1870 pour d\u2019abord se rendre au Danemark, puis en France. Il ne revint en Islande qu\u2019\u00e0 deux occasions au\u00a0 cours de sa vie. Il trouva la mort en Allemagne lors d\u2019une attaque a\u00e9rienne qui s\u2019abattit sur Cologne en 1944.
