Le peintre, qui a su \u00e9mouvoir ses contemporains, est rapidement devenu l\u2019un des artistes les plus reconnus du pays. N\u00e9 en 1885 \u00e0 Me\u00f0aland pr\u00e8s de Kirkjub\u00e6jarklaustur dans une grande pauvret\u00e9, c\u2019est \u00e0 Borgarfj\u00f6r\u00f0ur Eystri qu\u2019il grandit. En 1911, il part s\u2019installer \u00e0 Londres. Il y reste un an avant de s\u2019installer \u00e0 Copenhague o\u00f9 il obtient un dipl\u00f4me de la Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts en 1917. C\u2019est \u00e0 son retour en Islande qu\u2019il conna\u00eet la c\u00e9l\u00e9brit\u00e9. Cet homme \u00e0 l\u2019esprit boh\u00e8me a v\u00e9cu dans le m\u00eame studio jusqu\u2019\u00e0 sa mort. Comme tout g\u00e9ni, il avait une technique unique pour peindre les paysages islandais, qui constituent le th\u00e8me majeur de ses peintures. Nomm\u00e9 en hommage \u00e0 l\u2019artiste, Kjarvalssta\u00f0ir est le premier lieu en Islande d\u00e9di\u00e9 \u00e0 l\u2019art.
