La r\u00e9gion n\u2019est situ\u00e9e qu\u2019\u00e0 280\u00a0km du Groenland par le d\u00e9troit de Danemark. Cette r\u00e9gion exceptionnelle est class\u00e9e r\u00e9serve naturelle depuis 1975. Elle se distingue aussi par des temp\u00e9ratures moyennes les plus basses d\u2019Islande. Pourtant, gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 ses sources abondantes de nourriture, la r\u00e9gion ne connut pas la famine ni Moyen-\u00c2ge ni pendant la grande famine qui suivit l\u2019\u00e9ruption du Laki de 1783. La r\u00e9gion a en effet la chance d\u2019abriter deux des plus grandes falaises &#8211; habitats du plus grand nombre d\u2019oiseaux de l\u2019h\u00e9misph\u00e8re nord &#8211; H\u00e6lav\u00edkurbjarg et Hornbjarg, qui ont nourri la population, en compl\u00e9ment d\u2019eaux tr\u00e8s poissonneuses. \u00c0 partir de 1900 avec l\u2019arriv\u00e9e des temps modernes, la r\u00e9gion des Hornstrandir a vu sa population augmenter pour atteindre plus de 1000\u00a0habitants en 1920. Mais elle fut d\u00e9sert\u00e9e seulement une vingtaine d\u2019ann\u00e9es apr\u00e8s.
