Le pays s\u2019est tourn\u00e9 vers l\u2019\u00e9nergie g\u00e9othermique, qui repr\u00e9sente d\u00e9sormais 70\u00a0% de sa consommation totale. En 1944, elle repr\u00e9sentait seulement 15\u00a0% de sa consommation totale. D\u2019autres \u00e9nergies ont \u00e9t\u00e9 d\u00e9velopp\u00e9es ces 80\u00a0derni\u00e8res ann\u00e9es\u00a0: la production hydro\u00e9lectrique a bondi de 3\u00a0% \u00e0 presque un cinqui\u00e8me de la consommation totale d\u2019\u00e9nergie. Malgr\u00e9 une augmentation du nombre de voitures et de bateaux, la consommation de p\u00e9trole a diminu\u00e9, passant de 15\u00a0% \u00e0 10\u00a0% environ. Vers 1960, au pic de sa consommation, elle repr\u00e9sentait alors 65\u00a0% de la consommation \u00e9nerg\u00e9tique du pays. Gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 la combinaison des \u00e9nergies g\u00e9othermique et hydro\u00e9lectrique, environ 90\u00a0% de l\u2019\u00e9nergie consomm\u00e9e aujourd\u2019hui par les habitants en Islande provient de sources durables et locales.
