Sprengisandur est essentiellement un d\u00e9sert : un plateau aride situ\u00e9 au centre du pays, entre les glaciers Hofsj\u00f6kull \u00e0 l&rsquo;ouest et Vatnaj\u00f6kull \u00e0 l&rsquo;est, avec le Tungnafellsj\u00f6kull entre les deux. La route de Sprengisandur passe \u00e0 l&rsquo;ouest de ce plateau.  <br\/><br\/>L\u2019Association touristique d\u2019Islande a construit un refuge de montagne \u00e0 Nyidalur, au pied du glacier, en 1967.<br\/>C\u2019est un endroit magnifique pour se reposer ou passer la nuit au c\u0153ur des Hautes Terres.<br\/>Le plus long fleuve d\u2019Islande, le Thjorsa, prend sa source \u00e0 Sprengisandur et s\u2019\u00e9coule sur 230 km (140 mi) jusqu\u2019\u00e0 la mer.<br\/>Sept centrales hydro\u00e9lectriques appartenant \u00e0 Landsvirkjun jalonnent son cours, et une huiti\u00e8me est en projet. <br\/><br\/>Bien que la route de Sprengisandur soit une route de gravier, praticable uniquement par des v\u00e9hicules tout-terrain et seulement pendant les mois d&rsquo;\u00e9t\u00e9, elle voit tout de m\u00eame un trafic consid\u00e9rable de la part des randonneurs, des cyclistes et des automobilistes d\u00e9sireux de d\u00e9couvrir cette nature sauvage unique au c\u0153ur des hautes terres
