Cycling to the university

The number of students at the University of Iceland is now 15,725. It has increased by almost four thousand in the last two years. 9,542 undergraduates,4,152 postgraduate students, 2,122 doing master’s degree, and 680 are getting their doctorate. There have never been as many students at the university since it opened in 1911, on the 100-year-anniversary of the birth of Jón Sigurðsson, Iceland’s independence hero.
During the first school year, 1911-1912, 45 students studied at the university, including one woman. 110 years later, two-thirds of the university’s students are women, just over ten thousand women versus five thousand men. The University of Iceland is divided into five faculties; Social Sciences, Health Sciences, Humanities, Education and Engineering and Natural Sciences.
