How many waterfalls are there in Iceland?

No official figures can be found for the number of waterfalls in Iceland. But estimates indicate that there are up to 10,000 waterfalls, large and small. When driving south and east from Reykjavík along the Ring Road, the first actual waterfall to reach is Seljalandsfoss, 125 km / 77 mi from the capital. Just north of it is another beautiful waterfall, Gljúfrabúi in Gljúfurá River, which falls 40 meters into a deep ravine, which is almost a cave. The rock that closes the waterfalls is called Franskanef. It is a fantastic feeling to wade the river and enter the cave to see the waterfall seen in the picture. For a long time, it was thought that the cliffs by the waterfall were the dwellings of the hidden people (elves). I did not meet anyone except tourists during my brief visit on the way to the sun and heat in the East Fjords.
