Þau voru flutt hingað í fjórum hópum á árunum 1771 til 1787. Stofnin heldur sig allur á eystri helmingi landsins, frá Langanesi í norðri að Jökulsárlóni í suðri. Á sumrin halda þau sig að mestu upp á hálendinu, í óbyggðunum norðan Vatnajökuls, mest kringum Snæfell.
