Frá 15. öld varð Hafnarfjörður stærsta verslunarhöfn Íslands, og mikil útgerð hefur verið stunduð þarna frá landnámi, en bróðursonur Ingólfs Arnarssonar, fyrsta landnámsmannsins, sem settist að í Reykjavík, Ásbjörn Özurarson nam Hafnarfjörð.
