Þarna iðaði allt af lífi og fjöri á síðustu öld í kjölfar byggingu glæsilegrar síldarverksmiðju á þriðja áratug síðustu aldar. Slíkur var mannfjöldinn að sumir sem unnu síldina gátu ekki gist í húsunum á staðnum heldur var gist í fyrrum farþega- og flutningaskipinu Suðurlandinu sem var bundið við festar.
