The joy of art

Kviksjá / Kaleidoscope í vestursal Kjarvalsstaða

It is so rewarding and fun to go to Kjarvalsstaðir right now. In this 50-year-old building, which is the first in the country to be built specifically as an art museum, the Kviksjá / Kaleidoscope exhibition is currently taking place in both halls of the museum, where the Reykjavík Art Museum’s collections are shown. Great work and a great show. In the east hall, the works of artists from the beginning of the last century until 1973 are shown (an article about it was in Land & Saga / Icelandic Times, recently) and in the west hall, the works of artists from 1973 until the year 2000 are shown. As Birgir Ísleifur Gunnarsson, mayor of Reykjavík at the time Kjarvalsstaðir opened for the first time, said “There should be an atmosphere here that attracts the city’s residents. A cultural environment in which people feel comfortable.” It has certainly succeeded.
