Looking over the harbour on Skagaströnd

Skagaströnd on Skagi

Road number 745 is over 100km / 60mi long from Skagaströnd to Sauðárkrókur. It is one of the most unfrequented as well as the most beautiful parts of the country. It is good to begin the trip in Skagaströnd, the only village on the way, but it has one of the best campsites in the country. The town’s history, previously called Höfðakaupstaður, began when it became one of the few trading posts of the Danish monopoly store in Iceland in 1602. North of Skagaströnd is Kálfshamarsvík, with some of the most beautiful basalt columns in Iceland formed two million years ago. The farm Hraun á Skaga is both the northernmost and easternmost on the peninsula. It has not only a beautiful beach but also a breathtaking view over Skagafjörður to the Siglufjörður mountains and into Fljót.
