Description

Reykjavík of a new era is emerging before Icelanders and international visitors alike. The capital is undergoing significant transformation in the 21st century, with a new urban axis stretching from Keldnaholt to the west. This axis includes the proposed city-line transit system running through Ártúnshöfdi, Vogabyggd, Skeifan, the Olís site near Álfheimar, the Orka site on Sudurlandsbraut, Ármúli, Vegmúli, and Hallarmúli south of Hotel Nordica, continuing to the new Hyatt hotel being built at the old National Broadcasting Company House on Laugavegur, and onward to the Hekla site. Höfdatorg site has risen in Borgartún, and a new district is being constructed at Hlídarendi, across from the new National University Hospital. Developments at Hafnartorg and Austurhöfn stretch to the end of Hringbraut, with the new Gardheimar building located near the border with Kópavogur. New neighbourhoods are being built, and old ones are being revitalized through organized densification to maximize the use of the capital’s urban land.
