Future Past in Ísafjörður

In the Ísafjörður Art Museum, which is located in one of the most beautiful buildings in the country, the Ísafjörður Cultural House, the old hospital. The building was designed by Guðjón Samúelsson and inaugurated on June 17, 1925. Today, there are diverse activities in the building: a library, a regional archive, a photo archive, and an art museum, where the exhibition “Future Past” is currently being held in collaboration with the National Gallery of Iceland. The exhibition, which opened on June 17, 99 years after the building’s inauguration, celebrates the 80th anniversary of the republic and is the first in a series of exhibitions by the National Gallery of Iceland in collaboration with regional museums. Selected works from the collection of the National Gallery of Iceland are displayed, featuring artists who explore concepts such as independence and national identity and what it means to be a nation. There are few museums or places to sense and understand this better than in the heart of Ísafjörður, the capital of the Westfjords.

The Ísafjörður Library is housed on the same floor as the Art Museum.
