Thingvellir by Öxará is a protected and sacred site for Icelanders, as it is deeply intertwined with the history of the nation. At Thingvellir, we declared independence on June 17, 1944, eighty years ago. Thingvellir is also where the world’s first parliament, the Althing, was founded in 930 (the name Thingvellir translates to “Parliament Fields”). Current Icelandic laws state that Thingvellir shall always belong to the Icelandic nation and the site to remain under the protection of Althing. At this time of year, more than five thousand tourists visit Thingvellir daily, with about seven out of ten tourists to Iceland visiting this site. But why not let the pictures and autumn colours speak for themselves… We will be sharing more pictures from Thingvellir soon.
