Winter Beauty at Thingvellir

It takes just an hour to drive from the capital to Thingvellir, one of the most historically significant sites in Iceland. It was here that Althing, the world’s oldest parliament, was founded in the year 930. This was also where Iceland adopted Christianity in the year 999 or 1000. On June 17, 1944, Icelanders declared their independence at Thingvellir. Sixteen years earlier, in 1928, Thingvellir was designated as Iceland’s first national park. Since the turn of the 21st century, Thingvellir has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Icelandic Times took a short trip east to Thingvellir to experience its stunning winter beauty.
