Hraunfossar is a synonym for countless small waterfalls that come from Gráhraun Lava and fall into Hvítá River in Borgarfjörður. The water emerges from the edge of the lava in about a 1 km long section in countless streams and waterfalls. Just east of Hraunfossar is Barnafoss in Hvítá, known for flowing under a stone arch in great force. The area around the waterfalls was protected in 1987. From Hraunfossar, it is a short walk to the tourist resort Húsafell and Reykholt, one of Iceland’s most significant historical sites. The major poet Snorri Sturluson lived there until he was killed there in the autumn of 1241. He was the author of Heimskringla and Snorra-Edda, but both are very important books in Icelandic cultural and literary history.
