Tourists on Rauðisandur, Látrabjarg in the distance. The Environment Agency aims to protect both Rauðasindur and Látrabjarg in stages.

Farthest west in the continent

Rauðisandur is inhabited in the western part of Vestur-Barðastrandarsýsla. It lies between Skorarfjall and Látrabjarg, which can be seen in the picture in the distance. The farmland was considered one of the best in the country from the settlement until the last century. It’s regarded as both grassy, and the weather is excellent. Saurbær was the manor of the farmland for centuries. Many seals live on Rauðisandur, but the sand gets its bright colour from scallop shells. Breiðafjörður, which Rauðisandur borders, was the main scallop fishing area of Iceland in 1990 or until the stock collapsed at the end of the last century due to overfishing.
