The collection of collections

The Icelandic Folk and Outsider Art Museum is located on Svalbarðsströnd by Eyjafjörður, ten km from Akureyri. The museum, which is the main collection of Icelandic folk art, was founded by the couple Níels Hafstein and Magnhildur Sigurðardóttir in 1995. Today, the museum’s core collection includes around 150,000 works of art by 323 artists, both self-taught and school-educated, from the mid-nineteenth century to the present day. The main goal of the museum is to present self-taught artists, who have not received the attention or recognition they deserve for a long time. Icelandic Times / Land & Saga stopped by to take a look… but the museum is open from the beginning of May until the middle of September.
