Mývatn, the fourth largest lake in Iceland, covering 37 square kilometres, is unique in many ways. Both its nature and wildlife are remarkable. The lake is nearly 300 meters above sea level in Northeast Iceland, about an hour’s drive from Akureyri and Húsavík. The natural environment is highly distinctive, shaped by significant volcanic activity in the area, with the last eruption occurring at Krafla over forty years ago. Mývatn is relatively shallow and is renowned for its diverse birdlife, hosting more species of ducks than anywhere else in the world. Walking, cycling, or driving around the lake is comparable to a marathon, approximately 40 kilometres. Agriculture and tourism are the main industries in the Mývatn area.
