Magnificent Mountains and Wilderness

Reykjavík, and indeed the entire capital area, lies mostly along the coastline from Kjalarnes to the north all the way south past Hafnarfjördur. Along that route, you pass through Seltjarnarnes, where the capital and the municipality of the same name are located, to Kársnes in Kópavogur, and Arnarnes and Álftanes in Gardabær. Inland, in all directions except west, there are mountains and vast landscapes. Closest is Esja in the north, then Hengill, Vífilsfell, Bláfjöll, and then the Reykjanes Peninsula, with Keilir to the south-southwest. Icelandic Times captured the mountains near the capital in colour, which at this time of year is actually monochrome, black and white.

Esja rises over 900 meters, straight up from Hvalfjördur or Kollafjördur. A beautiful mountain with many different aspects
Esja is incredibly ever-changing – always and never the same
