TWENTY-THREE WHALES

The largest whale museum in Europe is located in Grandi, on the west side of Reykjavik Harbour, with life-sized models of the 23 whales that visit or inhabit the waters around Iceland on displayed. This sea is abundant with fish and, no less so, whales. The Whales of Iceland exhibition is both educational, offering narrations and information in seventeen languages, and visually impressive as well.
Seeing a sperm whale or a beluga whale in life-size is nothing short of awe-inspiring. After all, these creatures are the largest living beings that have ever existed on earth, and they suddenly come to life in this museum, which opened ten years ago. It’s an exhibition that everyone enjoys because, in its simplicity, it is the very size of these creatures that ultimately takes your breath away—whether you are 92 years old or 2 years old, like my companions were today.
