Small Town – Big Coffers

Seltjarnarnes is the smallest municipality in Iceland, covering just two square kilometres. Yet, it is the twelfth most populous town in Iceland, with just over 4,500 residents and the highest average income among municipalities in the country. Seltjarnarnes officially became a town/municipality fifty years ago, in 1974, and is located at the westernmost point of the peninsula that stretches from the Ellidaá river near Ártúnsbrekka between Fossvogur and Kollafjördur and all the way to the Grótta lighthouse, at the tip of the peninsula. Reykjavík, the capital, occupies the majority of the said peninsula. Icelandic Times took a trip all the way out west to Seltjarnarnes.
