Hallgrímur Helgason (1959) is not only an outstanding author and poet but also one of our strongest visual artists. Currently, the Reykjavík Art Museum / Kjarvalsstadir is hosting Usli / Havoc, a retrospective exhibition of the artist’s career. Hallgrímur is the eighth artist featured in the museum’s series of exhibitions reviewing the careers of key figures in Icelandic art. The exhibition’s curators are Ólöf Kristín Sigurdardóttir and Aldís Snorradóttir. The exhibition is full of stories that Hallgrímur wants and needs to tell. He moves between the personal and the universal, responding to moments, conflicts, or beauty, drawing the present with his distinct sensitivity. Hallgrímur’s instinct is as finely tuned to atmosphere in his artwork as it is in his writing. Thank you, Hallgrímur—truly a man of many hats.
