Paths to the Blue

Of course I thought, the light in her paintings comes from Melrakkaslétta, north in Norður-Þingeyjarsýsla where the most beautiful light is. But Guðrún Kristjánsdóttir (b:1950) has the exhibition Paths, in the west hall of Kjarvalsstaðir, Reykjavík Art Museum, where she brings us light, the vastness of nature closer to us. Guðrún has created a unique position for herself in Icelandic art, where nature, light, weather become one. Also, stillness and power, like up north. After all, she is said to be from almost below the Arctic Circle, north on Melrakkaslétta. In this exhibition, which spans a decades-long career, she manages to capture the blue of the north, and tiny raindrops in a grand way.
