There are few who travel through the two small Barðastrandar counties (Barðastrandarsýslur), which stretch from Gilsfjörður to Látrabjarg, in the westernmost part of Iceland, and north to Arnarfjörður. It also has something to do with the fact that the road system in the southern part of the Westfjords is probably the worst in all of Iceland. Long sections of gravel roads, both in Gufudalssveit, west of Þorskafjörður, and then Dynjandisheiði, which connects the southern side of the fjords with the settlements in the northern part. But the future is brighter, a good road is finally being built through Teigskógar, which will considerably shorten the route west to Patreksfjörður and Bíldudalur. In addition, road improvements have started on Dynjandisheiði. But despite the bad roads, the southern part of the western fjords is one of the most interesting areas of the country to enjoy, both on foot, by horseback riding, by bicycles or cars.
