Where are the most beautiful drives and the most beautiful roads in the country?
Five road segments are unforgettable. The seasons don’t matter; they always surprise you. The 100-kilometre section of Ring Road 1 between Höfn and Djúpivogur is magnificent, with its Þvottárskriður, where the east and south of the country meet in Lónssveit.
Another section of the Ring Road is always unique: the 50 kilometres from Vík í Mýrdal to Seljalandsfoss. For most of the way, The Ring Road runs alongside the Eyjafjöll mountains. Then there is the loop around Skagi, north and west between Skagafjörður and Húnaflói, a 100-kilometer detour from the Ring Road.
From Arnarstapi, around Snæfellsnes, to Rif, through Snæfellsnes National Park, is a magnificent route with much to see, all under the glacier Snæfellsjökull for its entire 40 kilometres.
Last but not least is Dómadalsleið, a highland road just north of Búrfell almost all the way into Landmannalaugar. It is an incredibly beautiful route for larger four-wheel-drive vehicles. On Dómadalsleið, there are neither gas nor charging stations, just the untouched nature of Iceland. All these road segments are open year-round, except for Dómadalsleið, which is open from mid-June to the end of September.
