There are only two seasons in Iceland in winter and summer and yesterday was the first day of winter. The day always lands on the first Saturday after 26 weeks of summer (21 – 27 October).
The first day of summer is always on a Thursday between 19 and 25 April. Icelandic folklore says that if summer and winter freeze together, that is, if the temperature drops below freezing on the eve of the first day of summer, it offers a good summer. The lore is correct, at least this summer. It was freezing cold the last day of winter in the north and east this year, and the summer was extremely good in that part of the country.
