Iceland’s New Government

Three weeks after the General election, we have a new government, led by Kristrún Frostadóttir (1988-) , the leader of the Social Democratic Party (Samfylkingin). She will be the youngest PM in the history of Iceland, and the world’s youngest PM in the world today. The new government is collection of three parties, the Social Democratic Party (Samfylkingin), Liberal Reform Party (Viðreisn), lead by Þorgerður Katrín Gunnarsdóttir who will be Minister of Foreign Affairs and Defence, and People’s Party (Flokkur fólksins), lead by Inga Sæland, who will be Minister of Social Affairs and Housing. The Minister in the new government will be eleven, one fewer than in the last government, led by the Independence Party (Sjálfstæðisflokkurinn) who has been in government for 53 years, in the last 65. Seven Ministers out of eleven are women. All highest offices in Iceland are now led by women, the PM, the President, and the Bishop of Iceland.
