Jökulsá á Fjöllum: A unique river, the second longest in Iceland, 206 km long from Vatnajökull north to Öxarfjörður. Almost the entire river is part of Vatnajökull National Park. In Jökulsá á Fjöllum is one of the most powerful waterfalls in Europe, Dettifoss, which will never be harnessed for energy. Jökulsá á Fjöllum is protected for future generations. On and near the banks of Jökulsá, there are countless natural gems, such as Forvöð, Herðubreið, Rauðhólar, Holuhraun, Skinnastaður, Ásbyrgi, and Jökulsárgljúfur. The average flow of Jökulsá is 184 m³/s, and its watershed covers nearly 10% of Iceland. Despite the river being over 200 km /120 mi long, probably about ten people live within ten kilometres of Jökulsá á Fjöllum.
