To drive from Reykjavík north to Varmahlíð in Skagafjörður via the Ring Road 1, is the same distance as from the Westfjords to Greenland, 290 km. To the Faroe Islands from Stokksnes in Hornafjörður is 430 km, slightly further than from Varmahlíð to Goðafoss, or to take the southern route towards Suðursveit, just west of Höfn in Hornafjörður. To Scotland in a straight line is a distance of 810 km, twenty kilometers shorter than going to Vopnafjörður via the southern route. To Norway it is 980 km, which is the distance on the Ring Road 1 between Reykjavík and Akureyri if one drives along the South of Iceland through Kirkjubæjarklaustur rather than going North through Blönduós. To Canada in a straight line from Iceland it is 1660 km, slightly more than the ring road entire. The longest distance between capitals is from Wellington, New Zealand, to Reykjavík, with the distance between them being 17,125 kilometers. That is quite far, actually. Even much, much further than driving north to Raufarhöfn on Melrakkaslétta plains from the capital. Imagine that!
