There are precisely 400 km (240 miles) from Reykjavík to Patreksfjörður, the main town of the Bardastrond coastline. About half of the journey follows Route 60 along Bardastrond, which consists of the southern Westfjords’ fjords. The road along this picturesque coastal stretch is exceptionally beautiful, and significant improvements to the roads are underway. Bardastrond used to be the section of the national highway system with the longest unpaved sections, except for the central highland roads that are only open part of the year. Bardastrond is a sparsely populated area, but it boasts some of the best hiking terrain in Iceland with excellent grounds for picking blueberries. Along the route, there are plenty of places to stop, enjoy the company of others, and experience the stunning beauty of the Westfjords.
