In this exhibition, you get a glimpse into Svava Dögg’s world of thoughts through paintings and texts. She just finished her first year at the Icelandic Academy of the Arts, where she mainly focused on experimentation and introspection.
Through the year, she found out that she really really likes conceptual art, as well as using her voice as an artist to raise awareness about certain issues. For those who don’t know, conceptual art, in a few words, is primarily about the idea behind the object, that is, what the artist wants to convey. The object itself, or what the viewer sees, is less important.
The paintings in this exhibition were not predetermined, they just kinda happened somehow and Svava Dögg considers herself merely a tool of her thoughts, she usually doesn’t know what it is she is painting, or what the message is, until the painting is halfway done and sometimes not until the work is completely ready and up on the wall. Then it talks to her and she writes down what she hears and sees.
Humanitarian issues have always been on her mind. In recent years, her work has mainly been about mental health, but now it seems that global issues, especially the war on the West Bank and immigration issues are at the top of her mind.
The title, Samhengi, is an Icelandic wordplay. Sam-hengi. It primarily means context but can be translated as hanging together as the paintings are all hanging together, like hanging nails, on the walls being connected with some context. Context is extremely important as are commas.
