Thanks a Million!

Statistics Iceland recently published figures on tourist overnight stays from last year. According to the numbers, overnight stays increased by a million, or about 11 percent, totalling 9.5 million compared to 8.5 million in 2022. All regions saw an increase in overnight stays except for the Westfjords and East Iceland, which are the parts of the country furthest from the capital and Keflavik International Airport. The largest increase was in West Iceland, at 16 percent, while the Westfjords experienced the largest decrease, at seven percent. Reykjavík, the capital area, matched the national average.

Most overnight stays were in the capital area, totalling 3.5 million, with South Iceland coming in second with 2.8 million overnight stays. Northwest Iceland stands out as the region with the fewest overnight stays by far, recording only 182,000. However, this was still an increase of 5 percent, despite the region being full of unique history and beauty.
