Fljótaá River and Haganesvík

The Beautiful Fljót

The snowiest – and sunniest – inhabited area of the country is Fljót, a region located along the main route between Hofsós and Siglufjördur in the northwestern part of the Tröllaskagi peninsula. The name of this highland peninsula, situated between Skagafjördur and Eyjafjördur, is relatively young, originating at the end of the last century. For centuries, it remained nameless.

The peninsula is highly elevated, featuring numerous small glaciers, narrow and picturesque valleys such as Fljót, Svarfadardalur, and Hjaltadalur. Around and on the peninsula, you’ll find Iceland’s best ski areas: in Siglufjördur, Dalvík, and Akureyri. From Svarfadardalur (Dalvík), Fljót, and Siglufjördur, there are also heliskiing tours from New Year’s and well into spring, as the terrain and snow conditions are unparalleled for skiing, both in Iceland and beyond.

But the Fljót area is beautiful—extraordinarily so—all year round. Here are some photos from this unique place, located just a four-hour drive from Reykjavík on a good day.
