The House Where Ancient Meets Brand-New

Hafnarstræti 16: The building where SÍM, the Association of Icelandic Visual Artists, with its nearly one thousand members, is housed, has a long history. The building was originally constructed 200 years ago, in 1824. The City of Reykjavík acquired the building just before the turn of the last century and restored it to its appearance around 1880 when Consul Smith operated Hotel Alexandrine there. The city handed the building over to SÍM in 2001, and it now hosts offices, a visitor centre, and an exhibition space. Currently, the exhibition “HIMNA” is on display, featuring the works of three artists: Anna Jóa, Hulda Ágústsdóttir, and Ragnheiður Guðbjörg Hrafnkelsdóttir. Nearly all the works are from this year, created two hundred years after the building was erected.
