Highway 1 or the Ring Road around Iceland is 1322 km / 822 mi long and was completed in 1974 when the bridge over Skeiðará, west of Skaftafell, was opened to traffic. One of the greatest dangers of travelling around the country is the single-lane bridges on Highway 1. Now there are 33, like the one in the picture over Jökulsá in Lón. The aim is to reduce the numbers of them by 11, down to 22, in three years. There were 146 single-lane bridges 30 years ago. After all, it has been a special priority of the Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration (IRCA) to increase our safety when travelling around the country by reducing the number of single-lane bridges.
