White Ground in Iceland

From November 28 to March 23, there is more than a 50% chance of snow-covered ground in Reykjavík, according to meticulous calculations by local meteorologist Trausti Jónsson. The day when the capital is most likely to be fully covered in snow is January 18. Over the past 100 years, the earliest recorded snowfall was on September 8, 1926, while the latest day with a fully snow-covered ground was May 16—by which time summer should already have arrived. The snowiest inhabited area in Iceland is Fljót in Skagafjördur. Just north of there lies Siglufjördur, which, along with Ólafsfjördur, forms Fjallabyggd, the snowiest municipality in Iceland.
