Winter Light Ends at 3:30 PM

There was no light today. Just darkness. Now, in mid-December, Reykjavík gets just over four hours of daylight. The sun rises just before 11:30 AM and sets at 3:30 PM. If, like today, it’s warm, with temperatures above freezing and rain, it feels as if the light can’t break through. With overcast skies it’s dark, like night, in the middle of the day. I went out to capture an image or images, but there was nothing to photograph. No light, just a bit of atmosphere.

In such moments, the mind starts to wander. Here are winter photos from the archives, taken during the dark season, at times when winter light smiled all around. Because Iceland in winter is just as charming as in midsummer—just a little different.
