100-year-old Fákur

The equestrian club Fákur in Reykjavík, the country’s most populous and largest club, is celebrating its hundredth anniversary this year. On the occasion of this milestone, about a hundred members of Fák rode around the centre of Reykjavík today. Of course, Land og Saga / Icelandic Times was in the area to watch. The mayor, Dagur B. Eggertsson, led the group ride. He held a short speech at Hallgrímskirkja and said that Víðidalur, Fák’s social and stable settlement, was the largest of its type in the world. It’s in the middle of the city and would be so for the foreseeable future. Equestrianism is Iceland’s third-largest branch of sport, with about 12,000 practitioners. The largest is football with 25,000 players, and number two is golf with 19,000 players.
