at the Reykjavík Maritime Museum 10-11 June
In celebration of the Festival of the Sea event, taking place from 10-11 June, the Reykjavík Maritime Museum will be offering guests free admission and access to the museum exhibitions. Guests will also be invited to explore the old Óðinn Coast Guard vessel which is docked in the harbour by the museum. On board the ship, old crew members will be on hand to chat with guests and regale them with stories from the good old days and their adventures at sea.
Guests can enjoy a barbeque on the museum terrace and indulge in homemade cakes. The deck just outside the restaurant offers good shelter and great views overlooking the harbour where you can get plenty of fresh, sea air.
The museum is open all day from 10:00-17:00.
SS Wigry model ship unveiled
On Saturday 10th June at 11:30 a special memorial exhibition will be opened to commemorate 75 years since the Polish cargo ship, SS Wigry, was shipwrecked near Mýrar on the west coast of Iceland on January 15, 1942. During the exhibition entitled Their Memory Lives On, which will run from 10 – 30 June, a new model of the SS Wigry in 1:100 scale will be unveiled. There will also be displays of photographs, newspaper articles and other artefacts.
The exhibition was put together by the Polish Society of Iceland. Twenty-five crew members perished during the incident with only two survivors including one Icelander and one Pole.
Book launch party for the new title Heave Ho! Amusing tales of Icelandic Sailors.
In celebration of the book launch of Heave Ho! Amusing tales of Icelandic Sailors, Gunnar Kr. Sigurjónsson, Ragnar Ingi Aðalsteinsson and Magni Kristjánsson amongst others, will enliven the atmosphere with some entertaining stories.
The programme starts on Sunday 11th June at 11:00.
